Representing Children's World International, they are to bring entertainment and fun to children still traumatised by natural disaster.
After just 3 working days in and around the town of Langsa, the CWI tour had to be cut short as the CW team had to return home for personal reasons. The Charity is determined to finish this project and we are aiming to return to the area sometime between September and November 2008. At the time of writing, we are waiting to hear from the other participating organisations to see if this is possible.
Below is the rough notes that would have formed the CWI diary of the tour. As you can see, we had already managed to reach 1500 people in just 6 shows, and hope the rest of this tour will be just as successful!
Paddy and Charlie
28/2
show 1: 9.30 - 11.10
Elementary school in village just outside Langsa. Approximately 80 children.
Paddy warm up, Charlie show, parachute games, dancing, Charlie finale.
Good first show with power. Show filmed by Muslim Aid, and we were interviewed
by them for tv broadcast tomorrow.
show 2: 4.15 - 5.45
Village on a river outside Langsa. Sounds idyllic but in fact dirty and the river that
the kids played in was probably full of potential dangers like Typhoid, so MA tell us.
Started with approx 50 very nervous children and finished with what seemed like
the whole village. Approx 350. Show: Warm up, Charlie 1, Parachute, Charlie 2,
Dancing.
29/2
show 1: 9.30 - 10.50
School near yesterday’s afternoon village. Raining - so squeezed 200 children into
2 classrooms. Slightly different show with extra bits to make up for no parachute.
Paddy warm up, Charlie show, Paddy juggling + magic bits, Charlie finale, had a
chance to show how english police behave (disco cop), final dance! No CWI pics
for this - they all came out blurred!!!
show 2: 3.55 - 5.25
Village very near the langsa hotel where we are staying. Show done outside in the
rain but everyone stayed. Approx 250 children and adults (and some goats and
ducks!). Kids very wild but loved the show! Kept asking for money at the end so
Paddy asked for money from them - and one teenager gave him 100 rupiah!! Had
to chase him to give it back! Show: Paddy warm up, Charlie show, Paddy juggle,
Parachute football, Charlie finale, Dance!
1/3
show 1: 9.00 - 10.20
Elementary school in Langsa close to hotel. Approximately 400 children stood in
the rain to watch the show. Very hard to keep a performance space. Head teacher
very pleased. gave us tea and eggs after show. Paddy warm up, Charlie show,
Paddy juggling, Parachute football (very wet), Charlie finale, Dancing!
show 2: 4.15 - 5.40
Last show in langsa area, village about 10mins from hotel. Approx 250 children and
adults. Kids very nervous for first part of show. Diar (our MA translator) says they
have never seen foreigners before! Hard for Charlie to get volunteers in first part of
show. By the end though, we couldn’t keep them away! Paddy warm up, Charlie
show, Paddy juggle, Parachute football, Haggis and Charlie’s water fountain routine
(sorry), Charlie finale, Dancing!
